This Was Then

New podcast coming from the North Carolina Sports Network in July

If you love sports, and you love history, be sure to tune into This Was Then, a new podcast covering North Carolina’s rich sports history. Hosted by Tim Peeler and Todd McGee, two North Carolina natives with a passion for sports and telling stories, the show will appear on the North Carolina Sports Network YouTube channel and will also be available in podcast format wherever you get your podcasts.

This Was Then will remember the players, coaches and events that made sports headlines, but will also delve into some of the lesser-known and/or forgotten sports newsmakers.

Tim and Todd will have exclusive interviews with sports legends from the Bold North State, like

  • 1979 ACC Football Player of the Year Jay Venuto, who led the Demon Deacons to its first bowl game in 30 years after the team had gone 1-10 in its two previous seasons
  • Western Carolina basketball star Ronnie Carr, who made the first official three-pointer in NCAA history in November 1980 but saw his dreams of a professional career end after a tragic automobile accident in the summer of 1982
  • Members of the 1974-75 New York Stars/Charlotte Hornets, including owner/general manager Upton Bell, of the World Football League, which tried to join the NFL as a major professional football league but failed to make it through its second season.
  • Frank Tursi, author of an upcoming book, The Tar Heel Boys of Summer, about the many great Major League Baseball and Negro League stars from North Carolina.
